I can't believe it's been almost 3 months since I blogged and updated this site {except for my profile picture....does that count?}. It has been a whirlwind of a year (well, more like 6 months) for me, both personally and professionally. My families growth spurt continues with my daughter"s wedding only weeks away! Emotions are running high and the excitement is building!

It has been quite the challenge balancing and juggling the wedding and the holiday season, post holiday season, end of year inventory, income tax prep, & the beginning year buying trip, I must say. The last wedding I planned was over 10 years ago. I was younger and I was not working{One of the best parties I ever had!}. I consider myself in a semi-fragile state right now!

Pepperberry's continues to experience significant growth and I am definitely having some growing pains! I spend so much time working on the behind the scenes kind of stuff and right now, I'm behind on my behind the scenes tasks! Technology is great, but when you fall behind, look out! In the last 6 months, facebook has made some changes {does it change daily or is it just me? Is anyone on fb anymore? Are my posts showing up on their live feed? }, my email blast provider has made some changes {new image insertion technique that I just can't get on to}, I bought a new laptop {which isn't compatible with my printer, so I have to change that as well and haven't had time to research and buy one}, and for some reason, posting blogs is a little trickier with my new laptop interface. I haven't had time to figure out why yet...instead, I just stopped blogging! My new laptop will let me publish the post when I'm done, so I have to save my post and then log on at home to publish. Then the spacing is always messed up, the pictures don't line up right, and I don't have a ton of time to make it presentable!

It has been eye opening to me to see how easy it is to fall behind when you are not working on this business all the time. I'm not sure about other retailers, but I find it very difficult to write interesting descriptions and worthwhile news when I'm really busy and voices in my head are screaming "hurry up, write something and don't use the words "great", "cute", "funky"...or all the other words you use ALL THE TIME!" The pressure!

I've been away from the shop more than ever, and you have remained loyal and supportive. I promise you that after March 10th, I will get back to the business of running my business and be more present and focused. l just got back from NYC market and am so happy with what I found there. I am still writing orders and the new merchandise will start rolling in hopefully in the next few weeks! Can't wait to show you....a little overwhelmed with the thought of having to TELL you!

My inspiration came from these two reindeer that were peeking around the corner of a neighboring showroom where I was placing an order while at the NYC market last January. I think they even called my name. "Oooohhhhh, I'll beeeee righhhht with yooooou." I said aloud with a twinkle in my eye! I finished up my business and went over to meet my new friends. It was love at first sight and I wasn't leaving without them. The vision of holiday 2011 began just 30 days into the new year and it was a fabulous start!

Yards of colorful fabric roping make my friends festively unique! But do they look like Christmas? In western PA? Not so sure. In my head? Without a doubt!

It was at the Dallas market that my decision to shape holiday around these guys was cemented. I was pleasantly surprised to find lots more fabric roping. Lots. As in, how about oversize spools of it!

But what are they for? I don't know. They were just sitting around in the booth of a new vendor where I bought funky repurposed stools, and a chunky knit throw. They didn't sell Christmas items. The spools just turned into Christmas items by default. They match my reindeer!

There are 58 yards of rope on each spool. You can use it to wrap packages, or as a doorstop, or... with a sturdy post to restraint a small child.....JUST KIDDING! All of you are actually way more creative than I am and it's been fun to hear how you will be using it!

On a more traditional note, but in keeping with the colorful, artisanal elements I was building on, I give you this nativity set. Every year I look for nativity sets that are different from the ones you usually see but to no avail. Finally, my hunt was over.

Look at the vivid colors, painted by hand on this 9 piece tin set. We gave it a place of honor, front and center when you walk in the door.

Now don't be shocked but, for the first time in pepperberry's history, we put up a Christmas tree! Not your traditional tree, mind you. I was thrilled to find this winter white {my favorite color} yarn wrapped branchy kind of tree, perfect for showing off the red, blue, green, & silver mercury glass mini ornaments! Soooo beautiful they are! It's not a holiday without mercury glass, and adding these bright mini's was just the twist we needed to keep it fresh {and on theme!}.

Pepperberry's is not a "decorations" store. I just put in enough to set the tone, make a statement. The holiday story is the most challenging, as well as fun; and the process never ceases to amaze me. Every year the holiday collection comes together and takes on a life of it's own once I hone in on my inspiration. Watching it develop, evolve, and reveal itself to me is magical.

Happy October! We've tackled back to school, back to campus, and the new VB winter collection has been launched, celebrated, and autographed. Check, check, and CHECK! July, August and September were almost out of control busy. If there is a student in the tri-state area that isn't carrying a Vera Bradley {insert VB item of your choosing here} to school or college, I'd like to meet them...I think. We moved an insane amount of product out the door and it was wonderful!

The other side of the store has been going really well also. My goodness how busy you've kept me. {I did a 2 month backlog of bookwork the other day and finally had a chance to do 4 months worth of filing. Clearly, not the priority in the last several months!}

There are some new arrivals that I've been dying to tell you about, but haven't had the chance to before they SOLD OUT! I just got another shipment in and they're on their way out the door again, so it goes without saying, these LAZY SUSANS are HOT!

We have 5 or 6 designs, all inspired by European cheese labels. Truly works of art. They are a wonderful centerpiece for your kitchen table or island and they are going fast!

Let me take a min. to apologize for using "stock photos". I really haven't had time to take my own pics, edit, save...etc. Combine that with a new laptop and compatibility issues...you get the picture {excuse the pun}.

Another new line that I added in August....it sat unpacked and priced in the back room for weeks until I had a chance to put it out on the floor...is Vietri. I'm head over heals in love with it! It's a line of Italian handcrafted ceramic serveware that draws on art and fashion for inspiration and has been a trendsetter in the tabletop category for over 26 years. Such lovely pieces that exude a casually elegant lifestyle. Vietri, Irresistibly Italian.

Hopefully, I'll be sending out an email soon! Time is really flying by. Can you believe it's been one year already since our expansion? Did you know that this month marks the 5 year anniversary of pepperberry's? Seems like yesterday!

2 babies and a bride, our newest family members!

It's been a busy summer here at pepperberry's and at home for me. In particular, the last week in July was just hopping busy at home. My oldest stepdaughter gave birth to twins on July 28th in Bethlehem Pa, and my son got married on July 30th in Columbus, Oh. We knew a couple of weeks before the wedding that Lisa's Dr's. scheduled a c-section for the 28th, but I thought she would go sooner...not the week of the wedding! But she hung in there and delivered 2 healthy happy babies. Alaina weighed in at 4 lbs and Gabriel at 6 lbs 14 oz! We knew when she scheduled it that we would be en route to Columbus for wedding weekend preps, but through technology, we were able to see pics and talk to the new mommy numerous times throughout the weekend!

Now for the wedding! The ceremony was beautiful and the reception was lovely. The bride and groom as well as all their guests had a great time and I'm sorry it's over. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

It was very difficult to come back to work on Tues. Aug 1st. I have been so distracted and find myself sitting down to my computer to do some work and I invariably get sidetracked and end up looking at wedding pictures AGAIN! And now, after a quick trip to the other side of the state last weekend, I have baby pictures too!

I decided to post these couple pictures and write this blog in an effort to get back into blogging, emailing and the business of running my business! I need to send out an email, I need to change the profile pic on fb, I need to post something intelligent to fb, and I need to blog about the newest arrivals and upcoming events, I need to upload pictures...speaking of pictures....I just may go through babies and wedding one more time! Maybe it'll wear off soon.

fashionable farminista

I've been going through something recently...a stage? a transformation? a phase? I'm not quite sure what it is, and I can tell you that I honestly thought I was over it, but there's been an interesting turn of events that may just have thrown me right back into it! My family was ready to call the nice people with the white jackets to help me, but now I have some documentation to prove that I'm not crazy! So, what is it? What's been going on?

Well, back in early spring my husband and I decided to put my house on the market (we've since changed our minds for various reasons) and while we were looking at possible places to downsize to, I found the property pictured above. I LOVE this little place! Nine and 1/2 acres, a barn, a couple other outbuildings and a beautiful view.

I envisioned chickens, goats, rows of lavender, grape arbors and both a kitchen garden and a cutting garden. My realtor (yes, it went that far!) asked me if I realized it was an amish farm and I said: "you say amish farm, I say french estate". My husband pointed out that there is no electricity ....or indoor plumbing and it certainly did not qualify as "downsizing", none of which deterred me. To me, it was a blank slate. A space to create, and boy was I into it. My kids reminded me that I'm not a camping kind of girl and I do like my comfort, but I could not shake this. It represents a simpler way of life, open air, growing the food I eat. Putting on overalls, no makeup, a ponytail and a cute pair of boots. None of this has ever been "me". My family kept saying "YOU want THIS? I couldn't explain it, I just kept saying, "I know, I'm going through something...I don't know what it is, but I love it!

Well, as it turns out, I was on the plane headed for Dallas for my trip to market and pulled out a trade magazine. I was a little behind on my reading up on what's going on in the industry and decided to take advantage of the 3 hr flight to catch up. The very first article in the very first publication I opened was titled: "fashionable farminista"! It's a MOVEMENT! My husband was sitting 3 rows behind me so sharing my hysteria was a little tricky. It consisted of a wave of the magazine and an "I'm not crazy, it's a movement" announcement to all within earshot!

Here's what I read: "the popularity of raising chickens, having goats and keeping bees is on the rise, even among city dwellers, and today's flower arrangements are just as likely to come from your own garden as from the supermarket...". The article went on to say the recent recessionary times have caused a value shift from indulgent to pragmatic. It has tapped the roots of our once agrarian society. It has empowered the consumer to find beauty in an everyday object and appreciate the worn patina and antique richness. Farmers markets, going green, and organics give this trend it's modern twist and I am so there...

I'm sad to say though that my amish farm has since been sold to someone else. It is still vacant and I have told my realtor that if no one takes possession of it soon, I will be googling "squatter's rights" and moving in! Just kidding! Did I mention that this one had a fabulous barn that could be a perfect little warehouse for pepperberry's?! I could even upgrade my website to be an online store! This definitely has possibilities. I may have to settle for just the acknowledgement from my husband that if anyone could do it, it would be me...if I had a lot of money (oh yeah, that!).

I often think about the number of people I have met since I opened 4+ years ago that I never knew, or probably never would have known had it not been for pepperberry's. There are some very special people that I consider favorites of mine for various reasons, least of all, the amount of money they have spent here. Susan Chase was not only one of those people, she was at the top of that list. Her smile lit up a room, her laughter was contagious, she showered me with kindness, encouragement, and support and I will treasure my memories of her.

My deepest sympathy goes out to her family and her friends who are all as lovely and classy as she was. You are all in my prayers.

Juggling Act

I'm not sure when this happened, or how, but I think I joined the circus as the premier juggling act and the pressure is ON to bring my A game. I'm SURE most women have felt this way at one time or another, or possibly, they always feel this way, but sometimes there are just more juggling pins than usual. I'm so there!

Hence, the lack of blogging and newsletter sending. May was a very busy month here {thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!} and things on my personal plate are piling up. It always gets a little tricky when my personal life kicks into high gear for one reason or another!

Here's what you can look forward to at pepperberry's in the coming months. I'm working on a 2 tiered event {as in, something for BOTH sides of the store} for the beginning of July {watch your email}; I'm sneaking in a buying trip later this month to Dallas to spruce things up a bit for immediate delivery, fall and holiday; I'm working on an even BIGGER event {as in, special guest big} for late sept. or early Oct., and I'm working on our big Holiday Reveal event for early Nov. It's all behind the scenes kind of stuff. Lots of phone calls, emails and order checking that needs to be done between customers, the day to day stuff...and my personal life.

The next 8 - 10 weeks will be very busy for me. My son is getting married the end of July and my oldest stepdaughter is having twins...around the end of July, beginning of August. There's been more than a tad of pre wedding and pre baby prep going on already requiring me to be away from the shop a little more than usual. Both events are out of town, so that will be my vacation also! I like to be busy and luckily, crunch time is my favorite time! I hope your summer is off to a great start and you are able to juggle all that summer brings as well!

{list for my grand re-opening, Fall 2010}

I am a list maker. I love a good list. A legal pad is my weapon of choice. I have a library of used legal pads....and lists! More than loving to make a list, I love looking back on my lists for I never throw a used legal pad away nor do I ever tear the pages out! They've become my journals of sorts for my retail milestones. From when I first opened to present day how my lists have changed and progressed!

My legal pads are not for the day to day {read as ordinary, routine-y} stuff, they are the big guns I pull out for PLANNING. Events, seasonal buying trips, ideas and inspiration are all legal pad worthy! I get excited when the need arises for a legal pad!

As I look at the list pictured above, I can't help but wonder what my list making skills say about me. I don't always use the lines, preferring to go diagonally. I don't put one line through my accomplished task, I black it out with several lines. My lists are also categorized {can't you tell?}, never all lumped together in one continuous list. {I do my grocery list this way also, keeping each aisle in it's own column, which are never in rows horizontally or vertically, just in a diff. spot of the sheet.} Some categories are circled, some are boxed and every now and then you'll see a star or check mark. Are you still there? I guess I was thinking that you would need all those details so that one of you would analyze this for me! Sorry if I bored you!

At any rate, all this to say, I got out my legal pad today to start my scribbles for Fall and Holiday 2011! I think I have my theme already, and some of the buying has been started. I also am sitting on a secret about an event in late September! I need to gather my thoughts, re-read my notes and get crackin' on this. I do my best thinking with my trusty legal pad in my hands...after I spend some time down going memory lane with it!

My Mom

Many of you know my mom from coming in. Especially in the early days, when she helped out frequently around here. She still helps, but mostly behind the scenes. This picture was taken last Sunday, just short of 1 month after she had a heart attack.

Yep, April 6th my dad called me at work to say that he had called an ambulance because she wasn't feeling well. I thought it was probably just a panic attack. Wrong. When I got to the hospital, I found the Dr. telling my sister that they had called the helicopter and we needed to decide where we wanted to send her for an emergency heart cath. Wow. I asked him if she had a heart attack and he said "she's having a heart attack right now". I have been saying it was a "mild" heart attack given the fact that she never lost consciousness and she was semi propped up in bed talking to us the whole time as the Drs. were monitoring it. Her pain was more like "pressure" and she ranked it at 5 on a scale of 1-10. We had to tell her she was having a heart attack...then she got alarmed. So off she went to Allegheny Gen. for a stent in 1 artery. Luckily that was all she needed. When we got to see her after the procedure, she was as pink as a newborn baby. I looked at my dad and "uh-oh, you're in trouble now. You couldn't keep up with her before, now she'll really run circles around you!"

She is doing really well (doesn't she look great?!)...is following Drs. orders and taking it easy for the most part. She still wanted to cook Easter dinner, but we wouldn't let her. We will be taking her out for Mother's Day and we will celebrate a little bigger this year.

I need to thank Betsy and Janet for jumping in and running the place while I was gone. I checked in periodically, and could tell that you were in good hands. It was nice to be able to be where my family needed me to be and know that things were fine here. Thanks girls!

So that's the story not only of my mom, but also of where I've been. I was out of the shop more than ever this past month but things are looking like they are back on track somewhat and should be returning to normal! For the time being at least!

Gettin' giddy

As I eagerly await a new shipment of pictures, a reorder of Sid Dickens {already!}, and a few straggling back orders, I happily gaze at a new line of wedding worthy goods that make me absolutely giddy! These crystal candlesticks {hefty and heavy enough to double as a weapon!} are absolutely gorgeous! Named The Manhattan Collection with good reason, the sophisticated style with a current edge will meld into any palette and get along well with a full range of decorating styles.

These are the next up and coming "must have" look in candlesticks. We've seen architecturally inspired wooden candlesticks in whitewash and black finishes, and iron candlesticks, and those are still hot ones to go with {please tell me you got rid of those brass ones!}, but un-etched, sleek, chunky, crystal candlesticks were showing up all over the market in NYC! Yep, up and coming...and you saw them here first! Not your momma's crystal candlesticks for sure! Sizes ranging from 12" - 28" tall. LOVE.

Along with the new spring collection, we included some of our favorites from earlier collections. I love the way our wall turned out. I was so happy to finally get them in! I pulled out my handy dandy level laser shooter gadget and went to town making my grid {that little tool makes life so much easier}! It only got tricky when the nail placement ended up on a knothole in the barn siding! Gotta love barn siding!

It's hard to pick a favorite. For now, I think mine is "Ha" simply stated on the back "Nothing in life is better than a good laugh." Ask me tomorrow! I'm sure I'll have a new fav.! What will your favorite be? Stop in to see them in person. You won't be sorry.

Sid Dickens Joins the Cast at Pepperberry's {Part 1 of 2}

I’ve been hinting at all the new discoveries I made at the New York Gift Show this Winter, and over the next two posts I’m revealing two of my very favorite new debuts!

I’ve had my eye on two special collections for a while and I decided that Spring 2011 was the perfect timing to bring them to the pepperberry’s stage and introduce them to you.

They’re both so great they each deserve their own post.

Today the spotlight's on the acclaimed Sid Dickens Memory Block collection.

This line of handcrafted plaster art tiles is made in Vancouver, British Columbia. Designed by artist Sid Dickens, they are 5 x 7-inch plaques featuring original art in styles ranging from classical to traditional, vintage to contemporary. I'm lovin these sweet organizers that just came in! I bought something similar to this for my daughter for Christmas for all her jewelry, but it was vinyl {GASP}. I know. Awful! I loved the concept, but I couldn't find anything better, til I was at market! Her replacement is in the mail as I type. They're so simple and pretty; your closet will thank you! Functional and space saving. Small pockets for jewelry, larger ones for headbands and such. Pockets on both sides, ready to hang, trimmed out in darling little fabrics, these are a must have for all ages! We have them in small and large and I think you should have one of each, at least! They would even work for snippets of ribbon, buttons, & other small notions you keep in your junk drawer! Paper clips? Rubber bands? Stamps? Craft supplies? What will you use yours for? {necklace and bracelet sold separately!}

you know. from Love Story. It just popped into my mind as I sat down to write this. My trip to NYC truly was a love story for me and I really don't know where to start! Booth after booth of inspiration and wonderment! I am so excited about so many of the orders I wrote! I hope I can keep you "in the know" in our newsletter{s} with new arrivals.

I think I added a smattering of everything under the sun, and I love the mix! For foodies, bauble lovers, espadrille donning, nesters, gardeners, entertainers, "escape" artists...and the list goes on and on!

Bohemian glass bead bracelets are turning heads! No two are alike! We are awaiting the arrival of two more lines of jewelry also! So exciting!

I've been so busy unpacking the freight that I've hardly had time to post the pictures and send emails, but I'm trying! Please keep checking back. There's a really important blog post coming soon introducing two new exclusive lines that I'm really excited about! Can't wait!

Look what pepperberry's got for Christmas! The new signs for the front yard and parking lot were delivered as promised Christmas week! Designed to match my logo by

a la mode designs and handpainted by Patti Angermier, they were ready for Mr. Fred Garrett to install them...in the frozen ground. I truly thought he wouldn't be able to build the framework and get them in before spring, but no no, Fred was out there last Saturday in the cold, shoveling the snow off the grass to dig the holes and set the framework!
Doesn't it look great?! I love the rusty pipes!

And what's this? Parking? In New Wilmington? Oh yeah, baby! It's a parking lot just for you!

I hope your year is off to a wonderful start. I can't believe January is almost over! This time next week I'll be in NYC scouring the market for our next round of fabulous finds and wares that we "must have" to enhance our lives and the lives of those we love! Can't wait!

Way back in the summer I blogged about the evolution of my theme for Christmas 2010. The quick re-cap goes like this; I started buying for holiday 2010 at the Dallas market in June knowing only what I didn't want. In an effort to keep it fresh, I actually made a list as a reminder of the holiday looks I had already done, whimsical, handmade, european etc.. I love all of those looks so I had to be very disciplined and not buy anything that fit those descriptions. In the end, all the holiday merchandise I was reacting to and buying indeed wasn't like any of my previous holiday themes, but what would the 2010 theme be? There was a common thread, but tiredness set in and I couldn't see it. What was it, what story does it tell?

It was on the flight home that it magically became clear to me. I tried to close my eyes to sleep, but instead of sleep came words. I got out my legal pad and started jotting them down. They were words to describe the holiday merchandise I bought, and words to describe the elements I could use to enhance them. Words like: recycled (such a current trend), reclaimed and re purposed (one of my favorite things to do) eventually lead to rekindle (what better time of year to reexamine our faith journey), renew and rebirth. They were all "re" words! How cool would it be to use the current "green" trend, and the definition of "re" and apply it to the holiday season. Getting back to {remembering} the reason for the season, simplifying the decorations, pulling out references to the babe in the manger and the bible. That's when rekindle, renew and rebirth gave way to REJOICE! Rejoice in the Lord, rejoice in the season, rejoice that we have wonderful people in our lives to share this season with. REJOICE, to feel joy. It felt so right.

With each shipment my conviction to restore the true meaning of the season increased. This can be tricky in retail because at the end of the day, if you're not profitable, you're out of business pretty quickly and, as it turns out, this was probably not the best year to take a risk in the 4th quarter. I was also very unsure how my theme would translate in my new space because afterall, I didn't know I was expanding when I was in Dallas! Oh well. There was no looking back. Bring on the angel ornaments made from soda cans, and the crosses, some made from recycled glass and others from newspaper, as well as the tin angels pictured at the top of the page. All recycled, all biblical, and so begins pepperberry's Christmas story.

It is my hope that the paper garlands constructed from hymnals, and the straw strewn about will be gentle reminders to check your Bah Humbug at the door! We are rejoicing in here! Did you see that Pottery Barn's cover proclaims: "Give Joyfully!"? Imagine my surprise. Prepare and celebrate with a joyful heart and watch the stress of the holiday melt away.

Moving on the to recycled only portion of the theme, check out these fun Reindeer bottle toppers and the wine bottle cheeseboards {"slumped" is the technical term for the melted bottles}. If you are giving a bottle of wine, dressing it up with one of these bottle toppers instead of a boring wine bag is sure to make your hostess smile! We sold out of these at our holiday open house and just got another shipment in!

Another top seller this season is the wine bottle cheeseboards that are made right here in PA {Pittsburgh}! I had these in the spring and sold out and waited to bring them in for the holidays knowing that they would make the perfect hostess gift, couples gift, guy gift...etc.

Greetings and happy day before Pepperberry's holiday {re}veal! This is Laurie's niece SWP popping in for a quick visit. If you follow this blog, you may remember some photos I took inside the fabulous new expanded Pepperberry's a few weeks back (I'm still wiping mascara off my face from all my happy tears I shed for Laurie and her staff that week - well done, Team Pepperberry's!!)

So today, I had the absolute pleasure of heading back to the shop with my camera to capture some of what makes Pepperberry's version of the upcoming holiday so special. When I walked into the shop, the first thing that caught my eye was straw. All over the floor. You heard me.

Between you and me, I wondered if Laurie's pretty little ponytail was pulled too tight. "What is this, a barn?" And then it hit me. Duh. The manger. Of course she would think of that detail. Of course she would figure out a way to remind us why we're shopping in the first place. I could stop here, but there's more. As if remembering the reason for the season wasn't enough to stop me in my tracks, Laurie has figured out a way to celebrate the concepts of recycling/reusing/refurbishing/reinventing. You'll see this at work when the snowmen (made of rusted old bicycle tires) greet you from the window boxes. You'll notice this in the selection of unique finds like angels made from old soda cans, or candles made from sawed off old wine bottles. It certainly made me rethink things....and it definitely gave me more reason to rejoice this season. Laurie (and team), once again, well done! Thank you for sharing your vision with us :)

On Sept 18th, at 4 p.m. I locked the front door to pepperberry's as I knew it. My quaint little 20 x 20 (400 sq ft) downstairs showroom would never look the same! The Vera Bradley line was 5 days away from calling that room home while the merchandise in that room was moving into the rest of the building and I was looking forward to putting it all together in not a lot of time! There was so much to do! I had to order a couple more fixtures from Vera Bradley to fill the space and the lead time was barely enough time. No one from VB was willing to promise that they'd be delivered in time for our grand re-opening, hence my shock when the island that floats in the center of the room came in super fast! It came in a few days before I actually took possession of the new place, which was Sept. 1st! Luckily I have a great landlord and she let me store it on the new side. The other piece, the new bookcase, came in 6 days before the move! WHEW! It was white glove delivery, so I all I had to do was clear a space and make a path for it, not that that was easy! It was time to allow for a little disarray!

As far as getting the new space ready, my landlord took out the partitions lickety split, did some finishing work and cleared out the remnants of the former tenants. All I needed to do was lighting, window treatments and of course, add more product and display fixtures....well, you know, not really "fixtures", alternative fixtures! This was the fun part for me! I started placing orders IMMEDIATELY. It was Aug. 10th when I made the decision to expand after having a very busy Saturday {Aug 7th} and I realized that I was truly dreading going through another busy holiday season in my small, confining, existing space. I called my landlord that night to see if the space attached to me was still available, and made the final decision 3 days later. No looking back...there was no time. I had decided to hold our grand re-opening event in conjunction with the Vera Bradley winter debut Sept. 23rd. That was just over 5 weeks away! Oh, and did I mention that my hubby and I had a vacation planned right in the middle of that time period! I had to work hard and fast! I came up with the name of the event{Shopping, Sugar & Champagne} pretty quickly, I just needed to get the info to my graphics girl and have her breath life into it.

I had pegged the feeling of the new space to be earthy european with underlying industrial / scrapyard tones. My biggest fear was that some of my choices could come off as "country" and that was totally unacceptable. I started with the window treatments. I had already decided on awnings again, but I wanted a different version of the ones in my original showroom. I always liked the outdoor grocery market type of awning so that was the obvious choice. I found french grain sacks that had french logos in red that would be perfect and a quick scavenging trip to my favorite secret "found objects" resource resulted in finding the perfect rods. They are old wooden fabric bolts! The tie to the fabric / design industry was meaningful for me being that's where I started! It was a no brainer. I just needed to figure out how we were going to hang them. I didn't want brackets, too traditional. I came up with suspending them from the ceiling with chains! Of course we trimmed them out with a fringe of faucet knobs, hand sewn by my sister and mother! Oh yeah, I was a happy girl! You know how much I love my faucet knobs!

Lighting was next. There was track lighting in place already, but I wanted hanging pendants above the cash wrap and needed chandeliers in the big room. I choose linen french script drum shade chandeliers with wire surrounds from one of my vendors. So simple in style yet packed with character. This was somewhat of a risk, because I couldn't return them if I didn't like them. They were mine! I followed my gut and as it turns out, I love them! The pendants above the cash wrap weren't as risky. They came from Pottery Barn and are getting lots of attention! They are canning jars grouped together at varying lengths and they are really cool! I thank all of you who thought I was the clever one that came up with that idea! I can take no credit!

Merchandise was coming in left and right, and it wasn't just new product. All my holiday merchandise was also arriving which is typical for this time of year. We could barely keep up with the unpacking. Even though the holiday merchandise won't hit the showroom floor til Nov 4th, it all needed checked, priced, repacked, and stored! UPS and FEDEX were both coming every day! The only merchandise not arriving was THE VERA BRADLEY! But, fear not, on Monday, Sept 20th the movers pulled in to pepperberry's with a truckload from my house and right behind them was FEDEX with 14 boxes of Vera which equaled just under 400 pieces to check in, stuff, and put on the new shelves in their new showroom! Our work was just beginning. Time was of the essence! We had a deadline and it was crunch time! Let me just take a second here for a shout out to Apollo Moving and Storage! Oh, how these guys move! They moved stuff from my house to my shop, from the upstairs to the downstairs, and the downstairs to the new side! And here's one to my shopgirls who really came through for me. Once again, I thank Betsy, Diane, Janet, Coleen, my mother, my sisters, and my husband. My goodness, they were so wonderful when I would say "I'm not happy. We need to pick up the pace"! That statement was made at least three times a day!

We were still getting non vera new product in while we were setting up too! Again, some of it was holiday {that we just set aside at that point}, some of it was for the new space, AND some of it was for the grand re-opening event! The little french cake rounds and the caramel arrived and needed unpacked immediately and stored properly. The champagne was in and needed picked up at the state store, and we needed to make a trip to the grocery store for the ice & napkins, as well as gathering tablecloths, serving pieces etc. from home! We weren't just moving; we were moving, debuting a new Vera collection, AND hosting a 3 day event! I was in my element! The more of a challenge it is, the happier I am! I was driven to pull this off. Talk about "go big or go home"!

When the doors opened on Sept 23rd, we were ready! The champagne was on ice in my grandmother's rusty wash tubs and I loved the contrast! The mood was so festive and we squealed like girls every time we popped the cork on a new bottle of bubbly! It's all behind us now and the memories will live in my heart forever! I was truly honored that so many of you came out to celebrate with us! The next event is just weeks away and I can't wait! {Did I mention that I was tweaking and approving final design proofs for our holiday open house during our grand re-opening?!} Mark your calendars for Nov. 4, 5 & 6 and keep an eye on your inbox mid oct. for details!

Feeling rather empty

But in a good way! Saturday I was open from 10 - 4 and as soon as I locked the door, I began the very overwhelming task of emptying every fixture and prepping for the movers that are coming Monday morning. My mother and my 2 sisters were there as planned to help. Oh my goodness can these girls move! I could barely keep up. {I did work all day and I think they did some power napping, although they are vehemently denying it.} My plan of attack was to sit down and cry for a spell, then sooth myself with some fast food, and then dig in to the unpleasant task at hand. I'm not real big on jobs that aren't fun and I am a veteran procrastinator. I told my husband that I didn't know when I would be home, I might be there all night. But no, my helpers had this place empty in 2 hours flat! I'd like to think that it was because I was so organized and they didn't have to look for empty boxes, or bubble wrap etc. We even moved a few of the smaller pieces of furniture. I just couldn't believe we got so much done in such a short amount of time.

That freed my up Sunday for the other loose ends I had to take care of. I was up there in the morning hooking up the phones, the fax, and the credit card machine, breaking down boxes, taking out garbage, cleaning out drawers and closets etc. And then, my mother showed up and said she wanted to wash down my baseboards and scrub my floor! HELLO! Now, this is a woman who excels in this sport! If it were an olympic event, she's walking away with the gold; so, I didn't feel badly asking if she would also just give the chair rail a good swipe!

The movers come 1st thing in the morning and I'm all set. A huge thanks to my mother and my 2 sisters, one who dropped everything, came to town and has been helping everyday since Friday. The other works full time but gave up her free time over the weekend to help! Truth be told, we really just love being together and we'll take advantage of any chance we have to hang out together! Thanks girls!

Falling into place!

Today I tackled one of the bigger projects on my to do list, the window boxes. I have always done the window boxes myself. I come up with what goes in them, gather everything up, remove the old plants, plant the new plants, water them, and then immediately start thinking of ideas for the next season. It's never ending and it takes some effort on my part to come up with different ideas 4 times a year. The new place has 3 more windows, so now I have to do a total of 5 window boxes. It's been a little daunting to me. They can be all the same, so it's not like I have to come up with 5 different ideas, but it's still more than double the work and expense of having only 2. The picture above is of the 2 windows on the new part of my space.

And here is what you all know as the entrance to pepperberry's.

AND, this is the cute little window on the side of my building (facing Rebecca's). This year, I enlisted the help of my sister and mother to gather and compose the window boxes. We loved this idea in the window box above with the topiary...and had I only had 2 window boxes to do, I could have pulled this off, but being there are 5, I had to settle for just doing 1. There was just no coming up with enough of the elements to make 5, so we decided to make this one little window be the lucky one and be the piece de resistance! My only fear is that when you all start using the new main entrace, and park in the new parking lot to the right of my building, you may not even see it! You'll have to peek your head around the corner of the new entry!

Here are some other pretty exciting things that are happening! Tomorrow the window treatments are being installed, the phone company is coming to run the lines in the new space, and I am meeting with someone from Tri County Industries (potentially my new bff depending on how this goes) and hopefully will be closer to getting a dumpster!

Yep, things are falling into place! Movers come in exactly one week!

I thought a quick update is in order. The inside of the new space is coming along nicely. The walls and partitions are down, the window treatments have been ordered, new product ordered, meetings with sales reps scheduled, lighting being considered, utilities switched, dumpster ordered, new sign for front yard in production, marketing for grand re-opening event in place, floor plans and cash wrap placement twirling around in my head.

I'm entering into the "hunt and find" stage of getting my new space ready, and it reminds me of the scavenger hunts I used to have for my kids and their friends! This was one of their favorite things to do and it was a highly anticipated event every year! Lots of memories were made and I loved making up the lists. I'm not kidding when I tell you that my list of "necessities" rivals the best scavenger hunt list out there! These are the items I will use to set the tone and vibe of the space. It starts with rusty chains {to suspend my very non traditional curtain rods?} and ends with old sign posts {my new card rack?} and is filled with lots of cool stuff in between! My garage is already resembling scrapyard heaven! I don't dare leave the movers unattended for fear they'll pass up some of my treasures thinking they don't belong in a retail shop! Oh...note to self: check to see if movers are up to date on their shots! Just kidding {kind of}!

Since I don't want to show pictures of my new space, I'll just feed you some history facts about my very old building... and my connection to it which may just surprise you!

FACT: Did you know that the building was actually 2 freestanding buildings that have been attached?

FACT: Did you know that my current space was originally built in the early 1980's by Lucille Sommerfeld and was a bakery {all the baking was done in the basement.}?

FACT: Did you know that the original building that housed The Feed Mill was a carriage house for the house on the corner that is currently Rebecca's Salon?

FACT: Did you know that the original structure was owned by Mrs. Sommerfeld and housed her shop, "The Carriage Trade" which originally carried needlework supplies and gifty items on the first floor and clothing on the 2nd floor...all before The Feed Mill was born.

FACT: Did you know that I worked for Mrs. Sommerfeld at The Carriage Trade?! I was there when she opened The Feed Mill and built the bakery. I'm not sure who the brain child of The Feed Mill was, but I know Mrs. S. owned the space and Mrs. Glover was the talented cook/restaurateur and it was a huge success.

So you see, this old building and I go way back. Isn't it funny how I've come full circle in a structure that was re purposed for retail by a woman who wasn't afraid to take risks and had unlimited creativity! She was my retail role model. Not only do I know the bones of this building; I feel the spirit of the original retail entrepreneur, and it inspires me.

Nothing says funky like the canvas pouf that is making it's pepperberry's debut! Made from used canvas boat tarps, it's sure to be a conversation piece in your home! What a great way to add character to your room, and it's so family friendly! It's already dirty-ish, beat up, and it's strength has been tested by the elements. Surely it can withstand your kids! Some have even thought it would be a great dog bed! Me? I just think it's a must have. A no brainer.

This is so cool! {Mostly to me, I'm sure!} I love when this old dog learns a new trick! Here is the newest Vera Bradley catalog that you can now see by clicking on the image or clicking here! Please be patient as it takes a min. or 2 to download, or upload...or whatever. I've never done this before and I will spare you the technical details, mostly because I'm still not sure how I did it, or if it's working correctly! I will tell you that this little clickable link did not come without a good amount of screaming, whining, keyboard pounding, head scratching, and general {misdirected} anger towards... well, my husband. {He's such a saint!} I sent out the email blast to my customers only to learn that the first 35 or so had a glitch, and the darn thing wouldn't open. I had to scramble around a bit to fix it and I'm still really not sure it's working. I'll find out, I'm sure!

The reason I had to learn how to do this, is because I misunderstood the new procedure for the Vera Bradley mailings. Ok, it's more like, I don't agree with the changes they have made, went into denial, considered boycotting the advertising, came to my senses...and missed the deadlines. I know some of you really look forward to and enjoy the catalogs and I apologize but VB took what used to be a quick 1 step process and turned it into a labor intensive 4 step ordeal. They have since come to their senses and changed it back starting in the fall. Until then, we'll just look at is as our attempt at going green! Yep, we're doing our part.

For all who covet my coffee mug {which is hardly just a mug, and is a staple on my cash wrap...you know who you are}, these are for YOU. Plates by the same artist! This line of french pottery is now represented by a company that was founded by a European couple who make their home in North Carolina, but still have ties to Old Europe and proclaim that all their products "aim at a clientele which values the origin, and the artistic and heirloom nature of its acquisitions." {Translation: pepperberry's worthy!} Love that!

There are 4 designs, all having just a touch of cobalt blue with a sprinkle of red on a grey/green background and they are sold separately.

Can you see them on your wall? In your hutch? On your end table? Bakers rack? Bookcase? ON YOUR TABLE?! Treat yourself to just one or all four, and enjoy a touch of Europe without leaving the country!
What a wonderful gift these would make {"hint" cards available at the cash wrap....just sayin'!}

Now, can you tell what this is? The newspaper they were packed in....from Italy! Today was garbage day and I just couldn't put it on the curb. I'm funny that way. I have it behind the cash wrap where I am now officially pinned in, still somewhat buried in debris and collateral from the Dallas market that I can't bear to part with, and now, not 1, but 2 boxes filled with Italian newspaper pages! I choose to look at it as surrounding myself with fallout* from my passion for "stuff" {my son's word}. I know the plates are far more valuable than the newspaper, but I like having it. It's part of the plates' story, and therefore, my story.

*btw, if you don't see me standing behind the cash wrap when you come in, please take a quick peek behind it to see if I am lying in a heap amongst my "fallout". It's gonna kill me someday, I just know it!

World Trade Center, Dallas Marketplace

Dallas was all I had hoped it would be and more. What a lovely show. Beautiful showrooms, nice mix of merchandise, and not too difficult to navigate through. It was a great time of year to go because not only could I buy for Holiday, I could see clear through fall and into Spring! It was like looking into a crystal ball! Over stimulating for amateurs, I'm sure! I bought for each season, and can't wait for you to see it!

My priority was Holiday. When I left home, I had only placed a couple orders for Holiday. The pressure was ON. I usually find my inspiration for holiday in January, but this year, nothing stood out and I was just a little panicked! By this time of year, I am usually rounding out the holiday buying, but this year, I was starting at the beginning in JUNE! I had a vague idea / concept I was working on, but I didn't love it. Every holiday catalog that came was one disappointment after another. I was stressed...until I hit the Dallas Market. In three days at market, my holiday took shape. I tossed out my original concept, took lots of notes, and sorted through it to see what would work together and what just didn't belong. I wrote down everything I reacted to, as well as what I was avoiding (looks I've done before: vintage, european, whimsical...) I studied it to see what it was saying...what direction it would take me. By day 2 I had some elements in place and a direction to go and on day 3 I wrote the orders. I had the vision in my head and the feel of it in my bones and I LOVE it! It's fresh, different, current....and... I can't tell you any more! I will tell you that on the flight home, I closed my very tired eyes, and tried to sleep. I was exhausted, yet happy and content, but sleep would not come. Words, ideas, displays, etc. were popping into my head ....good ones....I had to get out my pen and paper and start jotting them down. I let the ideas roll around in my head and on paper. Developing, evolving. Then it happened...first one word, that lead to another word that led me right to the perfect word to captured my concept / theme for Holiday 2010! I smiled out loud, made a note to call my graphics girl, put my pen down and finally slept. My mission was accomplished. Oh, how I sooooo love the process. It never gets old.

I've got my head in the clouds as I make my way to Dallas for market. I've got big plans to find loads of new lines, and tons of inspiration for fall, holiday, & spring 2011! Let's hope it's not just wishful thinking. I love new lines and I eat up inspiration!

I'm hooked on the key plate hooks that just arrived! Vintage keys securely attached to vintage key plates make these re-purposed "found objects" fun and functional! These are from the same company that brings us the doorknob wine stoppers! And, they've moved on to other stoppers also...DOORSTOPS!

Claw-feet salvaged from bathtubs made between 1880-1930, preserved to maintain their charm are now a clever way to prop and/or stop that swinging door! I am loving the direction this company is going!

I used to entertain alot. In my other life. My life before pepperberry's. I loved entertaining. It was all about the serving pieces for me. When I saw these upcycled melted bottle cheeseboards and spreaders, it made me want to throw a party. A nice little wine and cheese soiree. Wouldn't this make a great hostess gift? or Father's Day gift? What's your beverage of choice? Wouldn't it be great to have the cheeseboard to match? Like the wine bottle candles, I can only order quantities. They send whatever bottles they have in stock at the time, so if you see your fav. you'd better hurry in before someone beats you to it!

The wine bottles are plain. They have to remove the paper label, but the bottles are still pretty and the shapes differ from brand to brand. They are the top sellers in the line.

This is just pretty.

Literally. The newest artwork to come in is this larger than life definition of Art! Measuring in at 30"w x 40"h and weighing next to nothing, it is a silkscreen on gallery wrapped burlap! So tantalizingly textural, and notably neutral making it the perfect addition to any collection.

More of a creative creature? This is for you! Not as big, but still, statement making and space defining (excuse the pun!). This one measures 32"w x 18"h.

Making pepperberry's a little more luscious and tastefully tempting this Easter season! Sweet Shop USA which has been seen in Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor, Whole Foods, & other fine specialty retail shops is now at pepperberry's! The bunny praline pops are actually rich, chewy caramels made with fresh whipping cream, pecan pieces, and a tad of brown sugar to caramelize it.

Don't stop there. Chase it down with their signature truffle "fudge love"in fun cupcake shapes or the traditional egg shape. They are milk chocolate with a whipped cream center immersed in dark chocolate and again in milk chocolate. Decadent!

Please hurry before I devour all these new little lovelies myself! Betsy and I really did try one of each. Hey, it's all about knowing everything about the products up here....for you, of course! It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it. I wish I had an audio of the great sounds coming from Besty!

I am so excited to have gotten the window boxes planted this morning. I forgot how much I love playing in the dirt! The vintage faucet knob wreaths are my attempt at competing with the anthropologie visual merchandisers! They may not be up to anthro's standard, but I'm happy with them!

Even the blanket throws are blooming....and THE FRINGE! This line of luxurious throws are made with fringes rescued from the ends of yarn looms! The extra long, flowing, bursts of color are absolutely yummy! You should see it in the off white/touch of taupe combo {my fav.}. I think these will make lovely wedding presents. I have 3 weddings this summer and I have the most beautiful things coming in for my special brides! Don't worry, I bought enough for you to give your special brides too!

I had been looking for a line of bracelets to add to our current selection of jewelry and, having a pretty clear idea in my head of what I wanted {chunky, cuff-ish, silver, artsy}, I headed to market. It's not always an easy task, finding things in my head, and I was getting discouraged after striking out the first 2 days at market, but on the third {and last} day,...SCORE! These are exactly what I had in mind. It was almost scary! And their story! They are made in Paris by artists who recycle vintage metals from tea sets, candlesticks, trays, flatware etc. in sterling silver, pewter, and copper. I love everything about them, the look, the feel & the story. You will too.

Yes, it says "Toad Hut"! What do you keep YOUR toads in? I had a customer come in about 9 months ago asking if I carried toad huts. "No", I said, "but it sounds like something I'd like to carry"! It took me a few weeks to track a resource down and it turned out that the opening order was too high, given I didn't care for anything else in the line (I didn't need 12 toad huts!). This season, this particular vendor had beautiful handpainted tin birdhouses, and some garden markers that I loved and could put with my toad huts to make the min. opening order. Woooo Hoooo! I can now say, "Yes, I carry toad huts"! Sometimes that's all it takes to make me happy. That, and knowing that even our friendly greenhouse doesn't have an appropriate habitat for the toads in your life! (I called around last summer!) Only at pepperberry's!

This is so not the picture any of us want to see right now, but I wanted to use it so that I can address a little problem I am having right now. It's probably only a big deal to me, but it's driving me crazy every time I pull in the parking lot. You see, I cannot change my window boxes! I am dying to take holiday out, but I physically cannot do it. I planted the silver ribbon trees right in the dirt, which is now FROZEN SOLID and once again buried in snow with more snow on the way! I probably can take the moss star off the front door, but I don't have anything to put up there for spring yet anyway, at least not that will go with silver ribbon trees!

What poor planning on my part...so sad!

I'm sitting at the airport in NYC waiting to board the plane back to all of you and my favorite store! I bought the most fabulous things from all over the world. See the stack of orders and my badge from the show? The stack is double the size it usually is post show! I have a few more orders to place once I get back that will fill in nicely and round out the spring offerings. Wait til you see the bracelets from Paris and the cheesboards made from old european wine casks! Really spectacular!

Sunday morning, I'm off to New York City for market! You can't even imagine how much walking, walking, and more walking I do at market! It's hours and hours and hours. When I'm not walking, I'm standing. There is no sitting. It's just walking and standing....and thinking, and pondering, and picking and choosing....and I love it! Armed with a legal pad, nice pen, reading glasses, calculator, credit card & other show essentials, I will be in "the zone". I will be looking for spring lines, summer must haves, & holiday inspirations! Holiday is actually a priority. It's so important to find that 1 "wow" piece that will determine the direction and theme for the season. By this time next week, I will be well on my way!

I love hearing from you via email, but please know that I will only be checking emails first thing in the morning and again in the evening. If you have immediate needs, call the shop. Betsy will be there holding down the fort while I'm gone. I'll will be checking in with her periodically, and she will be able to get in touch with me if need be...unlike my kids, whose calls will be fielded by their father (who will be with me) during show hours! It's mostly for their own good; my parenting skills are clearly diminished when I'm distracted (translation: over stimulated) by all the wonderful offerings around me! I will be back in the shop Friday, Feb. 5th.

Today was the first day this week that I smiled when I walked in the door. I smiled because I saw before me the wonderful island that anchors the center of my shop. It is unencumbered by other pieces in front of it, beside it, and tucked at the corners of it. The drawers are all closed and the bottom shelf can been seen. I forgot how much I love this piece. It's been with me from the beginning and has served me well. It sits almost empty because I am planning to retire (gasp!) it (if the snow ever stops!). It's status will be listed as "as needed", my faithful piece that I will call on if the next piece fails to live up to my expectations! It's a tough act to follow.

And so... I smiled... and I think it smiled back at me.

I also smiled because, the inventory is done, and I'm well on my way to being reorganized and ready to begin all over again. The pages are blank (and hopefully unlined!) and the possibilities are limitless. What an exciting time! How will Pepperberry's continue to grow this year? I have some ideas to develop that are really exciting, and I'm working on my buying trip to New York at the end of this month. The amount of new product I'm seeing is really encouraging. There wasn't a lot of new product last year.

And so it begins again. I can't wait to see how the story unfolds!

My new favorite item in the store! These are soy candles in recycled wine bottles. They come in 2 sizes (see the larger in the background?) and the fragrance is Frazier Fir. It's a great day to light a fire.

On this blustery day, in the quiet of this moment, I am standing here at the cash wrap with a smallish pile of gifts to wrap and reflecting on the holiday season. It's easy to get caught up in the commercialization of it all, especially when you own a retail store. I have made a conscience effort this year to try to hang onto the true meaning of Christmas at work. I turned the radio off (sorry, Titan radio) and bought a pile of Christian CDs to play. "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" just isn't doing it for me anymore. If you haven't heard Mercy Me's rendition of "O Holy Night", stop in...it's my favorite song of the season and my favorite arrangement EVER and I'll be happy to play it for you. I am a member of a "retailers only" blog where we share our experiences in the spirit of giving and receiving support, encouragement, and insights from each other, and one of the questions from the hostess of the blog recently was "what music do you play in your store?". I haven't had time to participate lately, (sorry Abby!) but that is how I would have answered the question. The only thing I would change, if I could, about the music in my store is that I can't blast it at the volume that I love! (You should hear "Gloria" by Mercy Me at full tilt!) I try to practice my faith and christian principles everyday, and I wish I were better at articulating it. The music says it better than I ever can...it lights my fire.

My prayer is, that as you shop here at Pepperberry's, it lights yours this season, and throughout the year.

I think in a former retail life I must have been a Harry & David store...or maybe I will be in my next retail life! I love carrying this category, especially during the holidays. This year we have dip mixes that we paired up with silver snowflake spreaders. We pre-wrapped them (with the spreader tied on the outside), so they're ready to just grab and go! What a great hostess gift! This picture was taken before our holiday open house, hence the lack of bare spots. These have been a very popular choice. We also have dip chillers & warmers, & brie bakers & toppings, & ready made dips in jars. A nice selection of nuts, some fun cocktail napkins, and a pot of pistachios complete the display.

And then there's the tea. I still love Tea Forte for the holidays. It's the perfect gift for someone who has everything, and loves tea. The 2 packs, shown above, make great stocking stuffers. The flavors are Sweet Orange Spice and Winter Chai.

Who doesn't like hot chocolate? The Sugar Diva's hot chocolate mixes wrapped in vintage holiday papers are the perfect way to convey your warmest holiday wishes. I think these make great bus driver gifts....add our favorite snowflake mug to take it to the next level. And again, we pre-wrapped some mug / hot choc. combos just to save you some time during the busy holiday season.

Our newest addition is the 1 gal. tin of Chocolate Caramel Crunch Popcorn from The Hampton Popcorn Company. Perfect for the soccer coach. Stop in and have a taste. Fair warning: not many have walked away with less than 2 gallons...just saying...it's that yummy!

The open house was a great success (thanks for coming!) and I've been busy reordering on the best sellers, and wrapping packages! a tiny peek of what's to come

pepperberry's and ????!

The influx of holiday catalogs has begun and I'm finding that some of the big, national, very well known companies (I call them "the big boys") have picked up some of the same holiday items as pepperberry's! This mercury glass star ornament from Belgium was one of the 1st items I bought last January at the show! I love when that happens.

The count down is on! By this time next week, I'll be watching the minutes tick away until 4 pm when I'll close the shop and lock myself in for the remainder of the weekend (and Monday). I'll be working my magic to transform this tiny little place into the European Yuletide that I have been picturing in my mind for the last 10 months.

I can't wait to take you there.

Happy Birthday Mom and Dad! My mother turned 75 over the Labor Day weekend and my dad will be turning 75 within the year, so my siblings and I threw a surprise party for them! I don't usually share personal info on this blog, but I wanted to put in a plug and thank a couple businesses that helped to make this occassion so very pepperberry!

A big THANK YOU to JOSEPH"S MARKETPLACE for getting me the most beautiful lemons for my centerpieces. This is a family owned, very "boutique-y" grocery store. Their hot foods department is to die for (fair warning: get there early. It's all homemade and it goes quickly!), and they bring in bread from Breadworks in Pittsburgh daily. They also carry their own sauce with meatballs in the frozen foods that is so yummy. I'll never make my own sauce again! The produce and meats are fresh and the selection is just enough. It's my kind of grocery store! Check them out at Shenley Square, 2716 Mercer Rd. in Neshannock Twp.

And let's not overlook WEINGARTNER FLORIST for putting the lemon topiaries together for me and for making these fabulous centerpieces of hydrangeas and yellow roses. These are not typical looks for them, but they were very willing to think outside the box and make it happen for me. They were lovely...so current. Teleflora actually has been promoting some great looking arrangements that are casual, yet sophisticated that I think will appeal to the pepperberry's customer. mittens and fingerless gloves

You won't even believe what I'm selling in here....the fingerless gloves and scarves we all loved last winter! Yes, the same ones I sold out of in the first 2 days of our holiday open house last year. I got more last January and now I have re-stocked for the season. I wasn't going to put them out, but....YOU"VE BEEN ASKING! I have the mittens again (huge sellers!) and a new item this year, a wrap that goes around your neck and lays neatly inside your coat without all the bulk! They have a fun little embellishment that hits where it meets in the middle...they're really cool (excuse the pun!). You'll be sure to turn heads in the colorful hats this year also...but you'd better hurry...get them while it's HOT! My goodness, I couldn't have picked a hotter day to announce this! Sorry.

How about this footed tin planter? And how fun are these pinecone pumpkins?! I wish I could tell you I'm not selling much fall merchandise, but the wreaths are almost all sold out already. Don't be alarmed though, the fall door hanger screenings that we all love have not even come in yet. I was late placing the order because I WASN'T GOING TO ORDER THEM....but YOU ASKED and so, I ordered them! They should be in soon, and I was able to get ones that I haven't had before (always a plus!). A witch, a bat, a cat...FUN!

Now, if you think that thinking about pumpkins and wreaths for fall is bad.....I won't even tell you what I sold yesterday! No, it wasn't Christmas merchandise (I have a rule about that...not 'til open house the 1st weekend in Nov!), but it was something for cold weather! I'll tell you on another post! I'm not quite ready for the frenzy over these to begin again! Can you guess what it was?

Since I mentioned it, the holiday merchandise has been arriving daily. I try to unpack it secretly, but every now and then, I have to share a peek (and my excitement!) with whoever happens to be in the store! I love to see the reaction....and so far....I've been getting great responses! I could have sold some of it already....but you know the rule!

F is for Facelift...

and that's exactly what Pepperberry's is getting! A new logo is in the works! Something fresh & fun and new is just what I need! Those of you who know me well, know that I get bored easily, and I love changes! I'm also working on....well, I'm not, my graphics girl is working on...a custom template for my e-newsletters that go out monthly...or so! Such a big girl now! I can't wait to show you! Just a little longer...ok, maybe another month or so! You'll be the first to see!

I had mentioned in one of my last newsletters my big news about being chosen as one of the 50 Retail Stars for 2009, but my other piece of news is, Home Accents Today also chose pepperberry's as one of 3 small retail shops to feature in an article for the June edition! What fun it has been getting emails and calls from other retailers offering congratulations....and the vendors....can't stop sending catalogs! Lots of new lines to pick from....woooo hooo! Can you believe it? I still can't!

The perfect housewarming gift. Who can't use a few little vases that come in a beautiful bucket this time of year? Just can't get enough of these.

My idea of a good time....just add the phone....(and maybe p.j.s)!

This week has been a week of catching up. The most pressing business right now is rounding out my holiday buying....I have the theme narrowed down and I'm working on filling in and building on my initial holiday selections.....should be a merry one! Just in...my new favorite thing! The hanging lanterns that multi task as a vessel for your favorite blooms and blossoms, or lemons, or beach stones...etc., so much more than a lantern.

Wow, what a week it was last week. Thank you to everyone who made Pepperberry's a part of their Mother's Day celebration! Between waiting on all of you AND wrapping all your generous gifts to Mom (which I LOVE to do), I was busy unpacking all the new merchandise that arrived... all at once! All I know is that at one point last week I had 15 gifts to wrap when UPS arrived with 6 large boxes (that sat in the parking lot...like a magnet!) to unpack, price, and display! PLUS, I was placing even MORE orders! I have some really great stuff still to come. I am definitely back in the game! A little behind in blogging....!

Let these plates magically transport you to another time and place...filled with topiaries, lavender, and bistro tables. These make me so happy for so many reasons, on so many levels.

Keeping it french, don't you just love these collapsible canvas bins? The storage bins that fold flat for storing....not that you'd ever want to! The small bin is storing the grill matches and the large bin is storing the small bins! Love that!

Said grill matches.....aka: fireplace matches in the off season! How very convenient.

You won't find these anywhere else....Picnic in a tube. Four placemats, napkins, cutlery sets, & tumblers....all disposable. Just add food!

Great packaging is everything! Having a great wire trunk to display them in isn't so bad either.

oh, where oh where can my new orders be....?

So, here's my predicament.... I had really big plans for a center display make-over, however, my vendors seem to have other plans! Sometimes it goes that way. I placed an order at the Atlanta show in January, for a really cool German beer garden table with benches to display the new enamel dishes and linens and votives...etc. and so far, I still have not gotten the table, or the dishes! (I hear the table is actually "on the water"....code for: it'll be a while yet!) and the dishes are backordered til mid May......oh well. Til then, the other pieces I bought to mix in are looking great on their own....already sold some of them....so much for the great display I had planned. Having a Plan B would have been a good idea.......! Hmmmm.

At any rate...I find these bins and trays to be fun and wonderful. I hope you do too!

Wow.... I just walked through 1 of 3 doors on my journey of staying current and in touch with all of you! I have a feeling that this was the easiest door, but nonetheless, I will toast this small step..........possibly with my funky, new FLASKS!

Stop in and check them out....they won't last too long..........especially with all this celebrating!
